Last week, the Strategic Alliance Network in Hobart CBD hosted a presentation and open forum discussion on DISC Behavioral Styles, and it was an enlightening and inspiring event.

Using his experience as a counsellor, Ronald Cruickshank from Marriage Tasmania led the discussion, centering around the challenges leaders face in understanding and managing different team behaviour styles. Participants actively participated in the talks, sharing their experiences and asking insightful questions.

One of the key takeaways from the discussion was the importance of adapting communication styles to suit the needs of team members better. For instance, team members with a Conscientiousness style need time to analyse and evaluate information before making a decision. As a leader, it is essential to provide them with the necessary knowledge and allow them the time to make an informed decision.

Another critical point was the need to balance allowing team members with an Influence style to express themselves and remain focused on the task. One strategy is to provide clear job expectations and timelines so they know when it’s appropriate to socialise and when it’s time to work.

Participants also discussed the challenges of managing team members with a Steadiness style, who tend to be patient and supportive but can resist change and new ideas. Recognising their strengths and finding ways to motivate them to embrace new ideas and approaches is essential.

Throughout the discussion, participants shared their experiences and insights, and it was clear that everyone had a unique perspective on the topic. But despite the diversity of opinions and experiences, everyone agreed on one thing: understanding and managing different behaviour styles is essential for effective leadership.
